Overview
#Cape Town International Airport Cape Town International Airport is the second largest in South Africa. The largest being the Oliver Tambo International Airport near Johannesburg. The airport was extensively enlarged and upgraded in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Today it serves between 8 and 9 million passengers per year.
The terminal building was completely rebuilt and extended. It is now a split level design with the the domestic and international departures on the top level and arrivals on the ground level. Both domestic and international departures check in in the same hall, after which they move to separate departure halls. The terminal has 120 check in desks and 20 self service kiosks. Arriving passengers pass through the old separate baggage collection sections before passing through to the new terminal building. The automated baggage handling system is capable of handling 30,000 bags per hour.
A large variety of retail outlets are situated on both the land and air sections of the terminal building. Outlets include bookstores, foreign exchange services, souvenir outlets, grocery stores, clothing retailers, and duty-free outlets in the international departure section. Restaurants are located in the upper level with pleasing views of the terminal.
