Overview
#Klein Karoo The Klein Karoo (Little Karoo) in South Africa is the smaller brother of the Great Karoo to its North. The Klein Karoo is a hot and dry, fairly narrow, valley that runs from East to West, bordered to the North by the Swartberg Mountain range and to the South by the Outeniqua Mountains.
The climate of the Little Karoo is suitable for sheep and ostrich farming, where water is available it produces excellent soft fruits and vineyards. A number of wine estates are also found in this region.
The main town and business centre of the Klein Karoo is Oudtshoorn, famous for ostrich farming and the Cango Caves. It also thrives as a popular tourist centre. The annual Afrikaans arts festival (the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunste Fees - KKNK) that is normally held over the Easter long weekend, draws huge crowds.
Traveling through the Little Karoo on route 62 is a joy, with ever changing landscapes featuring mountain passes, rocky outcrops. orchards, vineyards and a number of quaint villages. The largest of these - more a town than a village - is Oudtshoorn, with De Rust, Calitzdorp, Ladismith, Barrydale and Montagu completing the collection..
Many locals travelling from Cape Town to George on the Garden Route, prefer route 62 to the National Road (N2).
