Overview

#Hole-in-the-Wall Hole-in-the-Wall is a natural phenomenon on the Wild Coast of the Transkei, South Africa. It is 8 Km from the small town of Coffee Bay. Coffee Bay and Port St Johns are the only towns that can be be reached by tarred road from the National Road (N2). There are a couple of budget, self-catering and remote accommodation options closer to Hole-in-the-Wall, but our preferred establishment is The Ocean View Hotel in Coffee Bay.

The “Wall” is a offshore stack of rocks through which the elements eroded the “hole”, rather special to see. The hole is right opposite the mouth of the Mpako River which probably contributed to the erosion of the hole.

The local Xhosa people have their own mythological tale to explain the hole. According to this tale the 'sea people', are semi-deities and human-like, but have hands and feet like flippers. A beautiful girl, who lived in a village on the coast, cut off by a high cliff, was seen by one of the sea people. He was overwhelmed by her beauty and tried to woo her. Ultimately the sea people called in the help of a large fish to batter a hole through the wall so that the sea people could reach the young girl and sweep her away.
