Overview

#Port Alfred Port Alfred is known as the Heart of the Sunshine Coast, situated halfway between Port Elizabeth and East London. The Kowie River runs through the town and it is the base for the large small boat harbour and a very successful residential marina development. The town boasts a wonderful blue flag beach and a great variety of water and ocean based activities.

Port Alfred was originally established by British Settlers who were brought into the country in 1820 to serve as a buffer on the frontier between the colonial farmers and the Xhosa people. Originally two towns were developed on either side of the Kowie river. On the West bank it was named Port Francis and on the East bank it was Port Kowie. In 1860, when Queen Victoria’s son, Prince Alfred visited the region, the town was renamed after him.

Activities at Port Alfred range from deep sea fishing, scuba diving, a canoe trail up the Kowie River, The Royal Port Alfred Golf course and a number of game reserves and guest farms. The nearby towns of Kenton-on-Sea and Boesmansriviermond also attract many holiday makers who seek the relaxation and joy of pristine beaches and rivers. Nearby Bathurst offers art galleries, a visit to an old traditional English pub and a pineapple farm open to visitors.
