Overview

#Riebeek West Riebeek West, situated in the beautiful scenic Riebeek Valley, is only an hours drive from Cape Town. It is the twin of Riebeek Kasteel, situated in the same valley. The charm of this village lies in the beauty of the valley, the impressive Riebeek Kasteel Mountain, the rolling hills and the play of vineyards and olive orchards. The village has a laid back feeling, which many visitors find attractive.

The Valley and Mountain was named after the Commander of the Dutch East Indies Company, Jan Van Riebeek. His company arrived at the site of the present Cape Town in 1652, to set up a refreshment station for ships passing between India and Europe. In 1661 Van Riebeek sent a company to explore inland possibilities for farming. When they arrived at this beautiful and fertile valley they were hugely impressed and decided to name it after Commander Van Riebeek.

In 1688 French Huguenots settled here and founded the viniculture that this region is known for. Wine tasting at some of the many wine estates can be included in a visit to Riebeek West and Riebeek Kasteel.
