Overview

The Addo Elephant National Park is an hour away from Port Elizabeth. Addo is the third largest National Park in South Africa, second only to the Kruger National Park and the Kgalagadi Park. Addo was founded in 1931 to rescue the dwindling number of elephants. Previously this region was home to thousands of elephants whose numbers were drastically reduced due to hunting for ivory. Today the Park is home to more than 550 elephants. These giants of the African bush remains its main feature. The Park boasts that it has the “big seven”, which is the usual big five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) as well as southern right whales and the great white shark.

Addo has the largest remaining population of the nearly extinct dung beetle. Plant groupings in the Park is varied and determines the ecological diversity that is found here.

Since it's founding the Park has been hugely expanded to form the Greater Addo National Park that stretches over 3,600 sq. km. It includes a huge marine reserve and two islands, St Croix and Bird Island.

Your tour will concentrate on viewing game. You should see elephants, different species of antelope, jackal, ostriches, dung beetles, tortoises and hopefully some of the other big five. Lunch to be enjoyed in the Park (own account).
