Garden Route and Route 62 Scheduled Tour
Overview
This four day tour starts at Port Elizabeth and takes you overland to Cape Town. From Port Elizabeth you travel west to the Tsitsikamma Forest and then turn off to Storm’s River Mouth in the Tsitsikamma National Park to enjoy the views and photo opportunities of this rugged and beautiful coast. From there you enter the Garden Route and continue to the town of Knysna where you check in at your hotel on the Waterfront. You embark on a Knysna Oyster Cruise (weather permitting).
After breakfast you travel to Plettenberg Bay for an ocean safari (weather permitting) in search of seals, dolphins and whales (in season). Enjoy lunch at Plettenberg Bay (for own account) before doing a guided tour of the Qolweni Township, school and creche. Overnight at your Waterfront hotel in Knysna. After breakfast you depart for Oudtshoorn. You stop at a view point in Wilderness before crossing over the Outeniqua Pass to enter the Little Karoo. Overnight at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge in Oudtshoorn with the opportunity for an optional game drive.
After breakfast you have the opportunity to experience a close interaction with elephants raised at Buffelsdrift. You do a tour of the magnificent Cango Caves before you depart for Cape Town. You travel along the popular Route 62 with it's ever changing scenery. The tour takes you through the Du Toits Kloof and the Huguenots Tunnel to enter the Cape Winelands en route to Cape Town.
Itinerary
- Day 1 Port Elizabeth → Knysna
Port Elizabeth to Knysna (±265km)
Your tour starts when your guide collects you at your hotel in Port Elizabeth. You travel west in the direction of Cape Town. You turn off into the Tsitsikamma National Park for Storm's River Mouth. You will enjoy wonderful scenery and photographic opportunities at this rugged coast. Continue your tour to the quaint town of Knysna. After checking in at your Waterfront hotel, you embark on a sunset oyster cruise on the Knysna Lagoon.
Dinner will be enjoyed at a Waterfront restaurant of choice (own account).
- Day 2
Knysna to Plettenberg Bay and back (±60km
After breakfast you depart for the nearby popular town of Plettenberg Bay. At Lookout Beach you board a boat for an ocean safari (weather permitting), in search of dolphins, seals and whales. Whales normally visit the South African coast between May and October.They visit us from the Antarctic to give birth to their young and to suckle them. After lunch (own account) you join a tour of the Qolweni Township, school and creche. The full income of the tour goes to the support of this laudable project. If so inclined you may donate pencils, crayons and stationary. After the tour you return to your hotel in Knysna. You have the opportunity to spend some time exploring this interesting village. Dinner will be enjoyed at one of the numerous Knysna restaurants (own account).

- Day 3 Knysna → Oudtshoorn
Knysna to Oudtshoorn via the Outeniqua Pass(±125km)
After breakfast you depart for Oudtshoorn in the semi arid Little Karoo. The route will take you along the Garden Route to the first stop in Wilderness, at the Map of Africa view point. This is an ideal photo opportunity. We travel on to George where you turn inland over the Outeniqua Pass to enter the Klein Karoo. Arrive in Oudtshoorn and continue along the Cango Valley to a nearby ostrich farm for a close encounter with these large flightless birds. After this interesting visit you depart for your overnight stay at Buffelsdrift Game Lodge. You have the opportunity for an optional game drive (own account). Enjoy dinner at the Lodge with it's lakeside setting.

- Day 4 Knysna → Cape Town
Oudtshoorn to Cape Town via Route 62 (±420km)
After breakfast you will have the unique opportunity of direct interaction with the elephants on the reserve. These elephants were all raised at Buffelsdrift. Guests can participate in feeding them. You depart for the Cango Caves, near Oudtshoorn. Enjoy a tour of these magnificent caves with it’s huge cavernous halls and the impressive dripstone stalagmites and stalactites.
You depart from Oudtshoorn for Cape Town. Route 62 will take you along valleys with ever changing scenery. In the Tradouw Valley, you stop for traditional Mampoer tasting. The R62 ultimately joins the National road where you turn south for Cape Town. You will be delivered to your hotel in the city or the Cape Town International Airport
