Pretoria Afternoon Tour
Overview
Pretoria was named after the Voortrekker (pioneer) Andries Pretorius. Pretoria falls under the metropolitan municipality of Tshwane. The debate around changing the name of the city to Tshwane is ongoing (2013). Pretoria lies at an altitude of 1,350 m above sea level in the transition belt between the Highveld to the South and the typical Bushveld (Middle veld) to the North. It is surrounded by hills of the Magaliesberg Mountain Range.
You tour includes a visit to the prominent Voortrekker Monument built to commemorate the great ox wagon trek from the frontier region to the north. This monument was inaugurated on 16 December 1949. The main points of interest are the historical friezes and the Cenotaph.
You spend some time at the Kruger House museum. The home of the old Boer leader of the South African Republic, President Paul Kruger, built in 1884. It contains the original and period furniture.
Your tour continues to Church Square the historic center of Pretoria, dominated by the statue of President Kruger. The square is surrounded by: the Palace of Justice where former President Nelson Mandela and his comrades were found guilty of treason and banned to the infamous Robben Island, the old Capitol Theater, the Tudor Chambers, the old Council Camber and the General Post Office.
You end your tour at the Union Buildings, the administrative seat of government when government is in Pretoria.This building was designed by Sir Herbert Baker. Enjoy the stately building, beautiful gardens and the lovely view. Pretoria is the executive capital of South Africa.
