Overview
##Constitution Hill Constitution Hill, in the centre of Johannesburg, used to be the site of one of the most notorious prisons in South Africa. Many political prisoners, including former president Nelson Mandela, were incarcerated at this prison while on trial. Today the prison is a museum and a stark reminder of how human rights were abused during the years of Apartheid.
Today, South Africa is a democracy, governed by one of the most modern constitutions, with the Constitutional Court as the highest court of appeal. It is symbolically significant that it was decided to build the house of this court on the same site as the Old Fort Prison and that it was renamed Constitution Hill.
A tour of the prison and the rest of Constitution Hill gives good insight into where South Africa came from and where it is heading in establishing a new democracy.
