Overview
#Gauteng Gauteng Province is the economic powerhouse of South Africa and Africa. It is the country's most densely populated province and is home to the biggest city, Johannesburg. It's population numbers more than 12.3 million people. Gauteng means "place of gold". It pays tribute to the central role gold has played in the economy and development of the province. Gauteng is also home to the biggest international transport hub in Africa, the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA).
In terms of tourism the province's main attraction lies in its cities and history. The various cities offer world class shopping and entertainment centers. Gauteng's history goes all the way back to our earliest human ancestors. Some of the oldest archaeological humanoid finds have been made at Sterkfontein. Black tribes moved into the area from further north some 2000 years ago and the first European hunters made brief incursions into the area some 200 years ago. The Voortrekkers (Boer-pioneers) settled around Pretoria in the 1850's. The relative calm and peace in this remote corner of the earth ended with the discovery of gold in 1886. Since then the tiny backwater, today known as Gauteng, rocketed onto the world map. Today it is a cosmopolitan, multicultural mix of people from all walks of life and from all four corners of the world.
