Gold Reef City
Johannesburg and the surrounding metropolis was founded on the discovery of gold. Gold Reef City is a theme park situated on the site of a worked out gold mine. It includes examples of the original houses and buildings of the old Johannesburg. Visitors have the opportunity to go down a mine shaft and to experience an educational tour of deep reef gold mining. A demonstration of gold smelting and pouring is included in the standard tour.
Added to the history of gold mining, the theme park includes an amusement park with a large variety of rides that are very popular.
A recent addition to Gold Reef City is the impressive Apartheid Museum that depicts the story of apartheid, the struggle against it and the ultimate resolution in the new constitution of South Africa.
