Overview
#Hoedspruit The small town of Hoedspruit is situated in the Mpumalanga lowveld at the foothills of the small Drakensberg mountain range. The Afrikaans name Hoedspruit can be translated “hat creek”. It is said that one of the town’s pioneers, after a long and difficult trek over the mountains, arrived there, took of his hat, threw it into the Sandspruit (“sand creek”) and indicated that that was it. That was where he was going to stay.
Hoedspruit is close to a well known cluster of private game reserves, in the Timbavati and Klaserie regions. It is also in close proximity to the Kruger National Park. The town has a small airport capable of serving commercial airlines.
After very small beginnings, Hoedspruit has become a premier eco-tourist destination, due to the number of game reserves around it, most of them boasting the ‘big five’ (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino). Hoedspruit is also known for the Endangered Species Centre, a non-profit organization specialising in breeding endangered species for release into the wild. These include cheetahs, African wild dogs, wild cats and black footed cats.
