Overview
#Knysna Estuary The Knysna Estuary is often referred to as the Knysna Lake. It is however an estuary and not a lake - even though it resembles a lake in its appearance. Most tourists explore the estuary by ferry and a number of these rides are on offer. The most popular excursion, which we strongly recommend, is the excursion by ferry to the Featherbed Nature Reserve on the opposite side of the Estuary (from the town). For more independent minded travelers, with time on their hands, hiring a small house-boat cum cabin-cruiser is an option.
You may also enjoy the Estuary by scuba diving, snorkelling or canoeing. Knysna has its own yacht club and offers a trip where you sail out, through the Heads, into the Indian Ocean. The Estuary supports a unique commercial oyster farming industry.
The mouth of the Knysna Estuary is a narrow channel, which is difficult to navigate for those not familiar with it. Provided that an experienced skipper is at the helm the channel is easily handled by small and medium-sized craft - including sailing boats. The channel is often dramatically depicted framed by two huge rocky promontories, known as The Heads or The Knysna Heads.
